Summary

The First Step Toward Recovery

Have you faced difficult events in life that are challenging your ability to cope? It’s common for individuals to face some form of trauma during their lifetime. This could stem from a car accident, abuse or neglect, the sudden loss of a loved one, a violent criminal act, exposure to the horrors of war, or surviving a natural disaster.

Without access to the necessary support and resources, unresolved trauma can lead to enduring suffering long after the initial event. In such cases, the guidance of a therapist is often crucial for the healing process. The good news is that trauma recovery is within reach through compassionate and skilled therapy at Trauma and Stress Counselling.

What is Trauma?

Trauma is a term used to describe the enduring adverse impacts caused by experiencing a distressing event. It can stem from a singular incident, like a motor vehicle accident, or from repeated exposure such as ongoing child abuse. Trauma becomes particularly complicated when it’s chronic and holds back a person’s psychological growth. It’s important to note that trauma is not solely defined by the event itself; rather, it’s by the enduring negative consequences it has on an individual.

Trauma Responses

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) outlines four distinct types of trauma responses that individuals may experience following a traumatic event:

  1. Avoidance: Individuals may actively avoid specific locations, sights, situations, and sounds that serve as reminders of the traumatic event. This avoidance can manifest as feelings of anxiety, depression, numbness, or guilt.
  2. Re-experiencing Trauma: People may experience intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and flashbacks related to the traumatic event. These re-experiencing symptoms can be distressing and overwhelming.
  3. Hyperarousal: Hyperarousal responses include feelings of anger, irritability, and hypervigilance. Individuals may also exhibit aggressive or reckless behaviour, including self-harm, as well as experience sleep disturbances.
  4. Poor Mood and Cognition: Individuals may experience a loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable, difficulty remembering details of the traumatic event, and changes in habits or behaviour since the trauma occurred.

Trauma responses can sometimes become more complex as a result of cumulative traumatic experience or childhood trauma. Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a psychological condition that arises from prolonged or repeated trauma, often experienced in situations where an individual feels trapped or unable to escape, such as ongoing abuse or captivity. It involves not only symptoms similar to PTSD, such as flashbacks, hypervigilance, and emotional numbness, but also it includes additional challenges such as difficulty with emotional regulation, negative self-image, relationship problems, and a sense of hopelessness or despair. C-PTSD can significantly impact one’s ability to cope with daily life and form healthy relationships.

Trauma Examples

Examples of traumatic events may include:

  • Experiencing bullying or harassment
  • Being a victim of verbal, physical, or sexual assault
  • Involvement in a motor vehicle accident
  • Receiving a medical illness diagnosis
  • Being affected by natural disasters
  • Witnessing disturbing events, also known as vicarious trauma

These events can have a profound impact on an individual’s mental and emotional well-being. It’s important to recognize and address these signs of trauma and responses, and to seek support and resources to cope with the aftermath of such experiences.

How Does Counselling Help with Trauma?

In our modern society, there is often a widespread belief that individuals should simply push through the effects of trauma and be stoic in the face of adversity. However, the reality is that trauma is not something that can be overcome through sheer willpower alone. Counselling offers consistent support over time, allowing individuals to move forward from their past trauma at their own pace while learning about healthy ways to cope.
