Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Summary

Finding Balance Through DBT

Are your emotions and thoughts preventing you from living a fulfilling life? Do you struggle daily with intense levels of anger, sadness, and anxiety? At Trauma and Stress Counselling, we lead with compassion in our approach and offer clients several trauma-informed counselling services and therapies. One service that can assist with emotional regulation is dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT).

DBT aims to help individuals with significant emotional regulation difficulties modify patterns of behaviour, emotion, thought, and interpersonal interactions that contribute to challenges in their daily lives. Through DBT, individuals can equip themselves with the necessary tools to better navigate their emotions and relationships effectively, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

ABOUT DBT

What is DBT?

DBT is a form of psychotherapy, commonly referred to as “talk therapy,” used to assist individuals with specific mental health conditions that involve challenges in regulating emotions. The primary objective of DBT is to provide individuals with the necessary skills to effectively manage their emotions, enhance interpersonal relationships, cope with distress, and avoid behaviours that may be damaging to their overall well-being.

DBT Therapy

The Balance Between Acceptance and Change

In DBT, the term “dialectical” pertains to achieving a balance between acceptance and change, opposing concepts. Clients undergoing DBT learn to accept themselves, their emotions, and thoughts without judgment, while simultaneously working towards positive changes to create a fulfilling life.

DBT involves teaching skills to individuals to encourage acceptance and facilitate change. The term “behaviour” is used as DBT aims to help individuals recognize problematic behaviours and replace them with more effective ones.

While commonly used for individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), DBT is also beneficial for those with substance use disorders, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and eating disorders. Individuals who may benefit from DBT are those struggling with emotional regulation, self-destructive behaviours, interpersonal difficulties, and those who have not experienced success with other therapeutic methods.
