Bridging EMDR and IFS for PTSD & Complex PTSD

A parts-informed approach to trauma reprocessing — for clinicians who hold both the structure of EMDR and the internal system of protectors, exiles, and Self.

IFS EMDR Self-led reprocessing
Rationale

Two models, one nervous system.

Clients with PTSD and Complex PTSD carry both discrete traumatic memories and entrenched protective and exiled parts formed by chronic relational trauma. EMDR gives clinicians a structured method for reprocessing traumatic memory networks; IFS gives them a map of the internal system — protectors, exiles, and Self — that so often complicates that work.

Clinicians trained in only one model tend to hit the same wall from opposite sides. EMDR-only practitioners can be caught off guard by destabilization, dissociation, or protector activation mid-reprocessing. IFS-only practitioners often lack a structured protocol for direct memory work. A growing body of clinical practice — and precedent among EMDRIA- and IFSI-approved providers — supports integrating the two, particularly for CPTSD, where a parts-informed approach to preparation and processing improves both safety and outcomes.

In the interest of transparency: the evidence base for EMDR–IFS integration is presently made up of case studies and clinical/theoretical papers, not randomized controlled trials. EMDRIA itself has called for more empirical research here. This workshop is offered as clinically grounded, consensus-informed training — not as a claim of independently validated efficacy for the combined protocol.
Who it's for

Built for clinicians standing in both rooms

Target audience

Licensed mental health clinicians — RCCs, RSWs, LCSWs, LMFTs, LPCs, psychologists, and clinical counsellors — who have completed EMDR Basic Training and have a basic knowledge of IFS terminology around parts.

Prerequisites

EMDR Basic Training completion is required before attending. Handouts, case conceptualization worksheets, and a reference bibliography are provided

Learning objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • Describe the core theoretical points of convergence and divergence between the IFS model and the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model underlying EMDR.
  • Identify at least three clinical indicators for sequencing or integrating EMDR reprocessing within an IFS-informed treatment plan for PTSD/CPTSD.
  • Apply IFS-based unblending and protector-negotiation techniques to prepare clients for EMDR's Preparation and Assessment phases.
  • Recognize signs of protector activation or exile flooding during EMDR reprocessing and apply IFS-consistent stabilization interventions.
  • Formulate an integrated case conceptualization for a complex trauma client using both IFS parts-mapping and EMDR target sequencing.
Presenter

Dr. Maya Misic, PhD, RCC-ACS

Dr. Maya Misic

Canadian Registered Clinical Counsellor & Approved Clinical Supervisor · Certified IFS Therapist & IFS Approved Clinical Consultant · Certified EMDR Therapist & EMDRIA Approved Consultant

Dr. Misic brings over 20 years of clinical practice specializing in the treatment of complex trauma and dissociative disorders. She holds dual certification in both modalities at the highest consultant level — a rare combination that grounds this workshop in lived clinical expertise rather than theory alone.

Her approach is shaped by two decades of direct work with clients navigating PTSD, Complex PTSD, and dissociation, and by years spent supervising and consulting with other clinicians integrating these models into their own practices.
